Overview
Iraqi Kurdistan is a region of extraordinary contrasts — where ancient citadels crown living cities, monasteries cling to cliffsides, and mountain gorges open into cascading waterfalls. This 8-day tour with Ard Al-Hani is your gateway to the full spectrum of what the Kurdish north has to offer: archaeology, nature, culture, and the kind of human warmth that makes every stop memorable.
The journey opens in Erbil, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth, where a UNESCO-listed citadel rises 30 metres above a tell dating back 6,000 years. Walk the covered alleys of the Qaysari Bazaar — established in the early 13th century — before heading west into the Nineveh Plains. Here, the monasteries of Mor Mattai and Rabban Hormizd stand carved into mountain rock, silent witnesses to two millennia of Christian heritage. The day continues through the sacred Yazidi valley of Lalish and the town of Alqosh before arriving in Duhok.
On Day 4, the tour reaches Amadiya — an oval-shaped fortress city perched on a solitary rock at 1,400 metres above sea level, founded by Imad al-Din Zangi in the 12th century. Its two historic gates and dramatic setting make it one of Kurdistan's most visually striking destinations. From there, the route moves east to Sulaymaniyah, the cultural and intellectual heart of the Kurdistan Region, encircled by the Azmar, Goizha and Qaiwan mountain ranges. Day 6 takes you to Halabja — a city that has come to represent resilience and memory in the modern Kurdish story.
The final touring day delivers one of the journey's most spectacular natural experiences: the Gali Ali Bek rocky fissure — a 10-km passage between the Korek and Nawathin mountains at 800 metres elevation — followed by the thundering Bekhal Waterfalls, one of northern Iraq's most celebrated natural landmarks. The package includes 7 nights in selected hotels, daily breakfast, all ground transport between destinations, a professional guide throughout, and entrance fees to all listed sites.
This is more than a tour — it's an immersion into one of the world's most layered and resilient landscapes. Book your 8-day Kurdistan journey with Ard Al-Hani today and discover a side of Iraq that few travellers have yet experienced.
Itinerary Details
Touch down at Erbil International Airport and meet your Ard Al-Hani guide for a smooth transfer to your hotel in the heart of the city. Settle in, explore the neighbourhood at your own pace, and prepare for seven days of discovery across Iraqi Kurdistan.
After breakfast, dive into Erbil's 6,000-year history with a guided visit to the UNESCO-listed Erbil Citadel — a fortified hilltop settlement that has been continuously inhabited longer than any other city on Earth. Descend into the Qaysari Bazaar, a labyrinthine covered market first established in the 13th century, then visit the Textile Museum and the landmark Choli Minaret before a relaxed evening in the city.
Head west into the Nineveh Plains for a day steeped in ancient faith. Visit the clifftop Mor Mattai Monastery — founded in the 4th century AD and one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world — followed by the rock-carved Rabban Hormizd Monastery. Continue to the sacred Yazidi valley of Lalish, then stop at Alqosh before arriving in Duhok for the night.
Drive north to the fortress town of Amadiya — an oval city balanced on a solitary plateau of rock at 1,400 metres, founded by Imad al-Din Zangi in the 12th century and accessible through two historic gates. Its isolation and mountain panoramas make it genuinely unforgettable. Return to Duhok in the afternoon for a city tour through its parks and lively neighbourhoods.
Travel east to Sulaymaniyah — the cultural capital of the Kurdistan Region, cradled by the Azmar, Goizha and Qaiwan mountains. Known for its poets, artists, and intellectuals, the city offers a rich blend of history and contemporary life. Explore its museums, traditional bazaars, and vibrant street culture as your guide brings its stories to life.
Visit Halabja, a city 14 km from the Iranian border whose name carries deep significance in the story of the Kurdish people and modern Iraqi history. Tour its memorial and museum, and take time to understand a chapter of history that has shaped the region's identity. The day is an opportunity for reflection as much as discovery.
The most dramatically scenic day of the tour begins with a drive into the mountains toward Gali Ali Bek — a 10-km rocky fissure carved between the Korek and Nawathin ranges at 800 metres above sea level. Continue to Bekhal Waterfalls, one of northern Iraq's most spectacular natural landmarks, where water thunders down the mountainside into a lush gorge. Return to Erbil in the evening.
After a final breakfast, your guide will transfer you to Erbil International Airport for your onward journey — departing with eight days of memories drawn from the mountains, monasteries, and ancient streets of Iraqi Kurdistan.
